Shout Out: Blake Sherwood, Stevenson junior and aspiring banker, venture capitalist was on Chicago Tribune.
Stevenson High School junior Blake Sherwood will achieve a goal this summer when the U.S. Department of State will send him and 599 other students overseas to study foreign languages in the nations that speak them. Sherwood, 17, will leave June 23 for four weeks in Shanghai, followed by another two weeks with a Chinese family inland, speaking and reading Mandarin. Click here to read more.
Four Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals (Speech Contest)
On April 25th, 2015, six students in the Chinese program participated in the 7th annual Speech Contest organized by the MCTA (Midwest Chinese Teacher's Alliance), which is an affiliate of ICTFL (Illinois Council of Teachers of Foreign Language). This contest was attended by students from over 50 schools in Chicagoland area including CPS and the suburban schools. The following students earned medals:

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) program, sponsored by theU.S. Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.

Luke Alexander Won an Opportunity to Study in Nanjing University in China
A parent emailed us sharing some great news about his son's Chinese language experience; a journey that started here at SHS.
"My son, Luke Alexander, graduated this past spring from SHS. He is currently a freshman at Georgia Tech in Atlanta studying Engineering and Foreign Language. His Chinese professor recommended that he enter a Chinese speech competition at Emory University. He competed in the JiangSu Cup Chinese Speech competition at Emory on 10/29/2013. He won an all expenses paid Semester abroad at NanJing University in China. He is so excited! Emory has not yet posted the results on their website for the 2013 competition, but a description of the competition, awards, and list of finalists that were to compete are available at:
